Bavaria (part 4)

It was our final day in Germany. We got up in the morning thinking what is in store for us today? I told my wife to check our itinerary and was really hoping to see something unique today. It was the tour of “Rothenburg ob der Tauber”. I thought it will be another city in Germany like the ones we have been visiting since the last one week. As my wife was getting ready I thought of googling about it. Bingo!! To my surprise it is a small medieval town also considered to be the most romantic town in Bavaria. The picture posted online really amazed me.

After a heavy breakfast we were off to Rothenburg. The moment we reached there we were excited to see that the entire town was surrounded by a huge wall with those big wooden gates at the entrances. It was actually a fortress in the medieval ages. The name “Rothenburg ob der Tauber” means a red fortress above the river Tauber. The brick roads, the horse stables, tiny alleys, houses of the medieval style we certainly felt that if we were in Game of Thrones.

Another thing we noticed were the sign boards used in front of the buildings. They still use those old signboards with pictures and no words.

We walked to the center of the town to see a small daily market. If you are a cheese lover you should try the different varieties available there. Well if you don’t want to spend, you can at least taste for free. Also, don’t miss to have the SNOW BALL – the signature dish of Rothenburg. It is actually a pastry with different layers of toppings and with a crunchy hard crust.

It was a cold day and we really wanted to have something warm. I remembered that there is a wine that is served hot and quite common in Germany. We went to a few cafes and there we found it. Its called Glue Wine. It is actually a warm, sweet and spiced wine. Strolling down the alleys with a glass of Glue wine was a complete bliss.

Next we went to a museum which displays the old prisons, how the prisoners were tortured, how the were kept etc. My wife didn’t like the idea much but with a hesitation she did accompany me. Though she didn’t went inside but was happy to click a few pictures for me.

It was ten past two in the afternoon and we were hungry after walking so much. Went to cosy, cute restaurant and had some local cuisine with some German beer to call it an end of our tour. We finally boarded our car to Frankfurt to catch our flight.  😦
